After the rather farcical end to my learning Spanish last semester, I have since moved on to German. This is now the sixth language in my arsenal, which is not something everyone can say! We're 5 weeks into the semester and so far it's been pretty standard- nice and simple stuff: how to say your name, where you come from, count to ten, describe the weather and so on. It has been a bit of a change from Romance languages; they have cases (yay!) and some different constructions.
It has had some interesting moments; one day we had what is likely to be the strangest and silliest piece of 'homework' I will ever get in my time at University. It was straightforward: draw a monster. Yes that's right, my fees are going towards paying lecturers to get us to draw pictures of monsters. Ok, there was some point to it- we were learning parts of the body, so the odd number of legs, eyes and arms would make for good practice, but still...
Instead of being cynical about it, I decided to do a pretty good job of it. I even coloured it in. Not to shabby I thought! Below is the picture I produced, das ist mein monster!

I think it's one of the better things I've drawn! Our textbook had its own ones, but not a patch on ours. One of them was a two headed dog named 'Gaga.' I wonder if it was having a subtle stab at the pop star, but somehow I doubt it, that's really below the Germans. They're not exactly subtle, are they? On the subject of being mean to the Germans (I haven't mentioned the war yet!!) someone on Facebook suggested that I draw a picture of a German, and the inevitable 'draw Hitler' comment came out. I doubt that would have gone down well; he only has so many eyes and arms anyway! But let's not start taking the mickey out of the Germans (easy as it is). For now I will do my best to learn the language without mentioning the war!
